A long discussion has been going on regarding Asians coloring their hair blonde (or some color not black). It all began when Japanese women literally abandoned their beautiful black hair and dyed it in all shades of brown. Recently we received some interesting comments. Linda says, "It may be that for some Asian women, they are becoming blonde because they idolize the Caucasion look. But, I think for most of the youth today, whether in Japan or the U.S. or anywhere for that matter, it's more of a fashion trend and for some they do it for the shock value."
We agree. Some Asians (that we are so used to seeing in their beautiful, jet-black hair) do it just o get a different look and shock everyone around them who does not expect them to have hair of any color other than black. Vy writes, "I am an Asian that is interested in experimenting with hair dyes. Among the colors I want to try is blonde. I don't understand how my urge to try blonde hair translates to me wanting to be "White." I concede that blonde hair does not come natural to Asians. But then again, neither does blue or red. Why would these colors be acceptable for "self expression"; while blonde is not. I've eaten apple pie.
I've played baseball - two things that are considered very "American". These things descended from Caucasians. Am I trying to be white because I eat apple pie? Would I be trying to be black because I listened enthusiastically to Jazz or hip-hop? What lines are drawn in defining a "Wannabe"? I feel that most people who are on the brink of dying their hair want to do so simply because they want change in their lives.
The simplest (and most immediate) way to do this is to alter your appearance. You see Caucasians slip between red, brown, and blonde hair without having their motives and cultural pride questionned. Why can't this same grace be extended to an Asian?"
